Pick Accuracy Measurement Guide

Define the measurement before calculating

Order accuracy can cover the complete fulfillment journey, while pick accuracy isolates item selection during the warehouse picking step. Fill rate, inventory accuracy, on-time-in-full, and throughput answer different questions. State the process boundary before naming the metric.

Choose one denominator

An operator may measure accurate orders, accurate order lines, or accurate units. Pick one denominator that matches the source records and retain it across the comparison. A line-level rate and an order-level rate are not directly comparable even when both are labelled pick accuracy.

Define an error and correction rule

Document whether wrong SKU, wrong quantity, omitted item, extra item, damaged or expired selection, substitution, and corrected-before-shipment events count as errors. Also document how duplicate events, cancelled orders, incomplete verification, and source-record exceptions are handled.

Collect the source records

Use pick tickets or WMS events, quality checks, shipment exceptions, return or claim records, correction timestamps, location and SKU context, and the reporting period. Reconcile record completeness before comparing rates or attributing a change.

Review transparent worked arithmetic

If one defined period contains 1,000 pick records on the same chosen basis and 985 meet the documented accurate-pick rule, the illustrative accuracy rate is 985 divided by 1,000, or 98.5%. The same record set contains 15 documented errors, so the illustrative error rate is 15 divided by 1,000, or 1.5%. This example is not a benchmark or target.

Interpret movement carefully

A rate can move because the denominator, error definition, verification coverage, product mix, location scope, time window, or record completeness changed. Investigate the underlying source records and operating context before assigning a cause, judging labor, or recommending a process or technology change.
