Apply as Design Partner →The Cold Chain Operations Challenge
Frozen meal brands face a unique operational challenge that ambient food brands do not: the cold chain. Every link in your supply chain, from the co-packer's blast freezer to the 3PL's frozen storage to the retailer's freezer case, must maintain a continuous temperature below 0°F. A single break in the cold chain can result in product that is technically safe but has degraded quality, leading to consumer complaints and retailer returns.
Managing Frozen Inventory Costs
Frozen storage costs significantly more than ambient storage. Most 3PLs charge a premium for frozen warehouse space, and the longer your inventory sits, the more you pay. This makes accurate demand forecasting even more critical for frozen brands, excess inventory is not just a working capital problem, it is an ongoing cash drain in storage fees.
Shelf Life and FEFO Rotation
Frozen products have long shelf lives, but they are not infinite. Managing inventory on a First Expired, First Out (FEFO) basis is critical to ensuring that older inventory is shipped before newer inventory, minimizing write-offs. Your inventory system must track the production date and expiration date of every pallet and automatically prioritize FEFO fulfillment.
FSMA 204 and Frozen Foods
Many frozen meal ingredients, leafy greens, fresh herbs, raw proteins, are on the FDA's Food Traceability List. This means frozen meal brands are among the most heavily scrutinized under FSMA 204. You must maintain electronic lot traceability records linking every raw ingredient to every finished good, with the ability to produce a full traceability report within 24 hours of an FDA request.
