The identifier
GTIN-13 / EAN
A 13-digit identifier associated with a specific trade item. It is product data that can be recorded with the product version, pack size, and other item details.
CPG operations glossary
EAN is a name commonly used for a 13-digit Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-13). It identifies one trade item; the barcode is the scannable symbol that can carry that identifier.
Plain-language definition
EAN is short for European Article Number. In current GS1 terminology, EAN commonly refers to a 13-digit GTIN, or GTIN-13. A GTIN identifies a trade item—such as one specific flavor and size of a food product—when that item is priced, ordered, or invoiced in a supply chain.
A barcode is different: it is the printed, scannable pattern that can encode a GTIN. A team may talk about “putting an EAN on a pouch,” but the precise distinction is useful when the product record, artwork, and retailer data all need to point to the same sellable item.

The identifier
A 13-digit identifier associated with a specific trade item. It is product data that can be recorded with the product version, pack size, and other item details.
The carrier
The printed pattern a scanner reads. It can encode identifying data, but the pattern itself is not the product identifier or a decision about where the product may be sold.
Illustrative product record
This example illustrates how an operator might keep the record straight; it does not assign a number or establish a retailer requirement.
If the item identity changes, the team should use the applicable GS1 and trading-partner guidance rather than assume this example answers the allocation question.
