Organic Mass Balance Ratio & Variance Planner

Compare the material records you enter with finished-output and expected-loss assumptions. Use the result to organize an internal review; it does not determine an organic claim, certification, compliance, labeling, audit, or regulatory outcome.

Compare your run records and internal assumptions

Enter the values from one production run. Results update only in this browser.

Run inputs

Enter the weight from your own run record for certified organic material added.
Enter other material included in the input total for this planning comparison.
Enter the finished-output weight recorded for the same production run.
Your internal planning assumption for the run. Enter a value from 0 to 100.

Planning results

Total Recorded Input
The two user-entered material inputs added together.
Organic Input Share
Organic input as a share of the user-entered total input. This is not a product-claim outcome.
Recorded Loss Rate
The difference between total recorded input and recorded output, shown as a percentage of recorded input.
Expected Finished Output
Expected output from the user-entered expected-loss assumption.
Output Variance
Recorded finished output minus expected finished output.
Loss-Rate Variance
Recorded loss rate minus the user-entered expected loss, in percentage points.

Enter all four values to create a planning comparison.

Planning and record-review aid only. This calculator uses only the values entered in this browser. It does not save or verify records, determine organic product claims, certification, compliance, labeling, audit readiness, or legal/regulatory obligations, and is not legal or regulatory advice. Review consequential decisions with your certifier and qualified advisors using your complete records and applicable requirements.

What this planner compares

This planner helps organize an internal comparison between material weights, a finished-output record, and an expected-loss assumption for one run. It does not know the complete formulation, product category, processing aids, certificates, source documents, record system, or other operation-specific facts needed to evaluate an organic claim or certification outcome.

How to use a variance

A variance is an internal review prompt, not a conclusion. Compare the units used, weights recorded, timing of the run, yield assumptions, and related production records. If a decision could affect certification, product representation, labeling, customer commitments, or an audit, confirm the complete facts and applicable requirements with your certifier and qualified advisors.

Regulatory context and sources

7 CFR 205.301 sets product-composition requirements for particular organic representations; those requirements contain conditions this planner does not evaluate. 7 CFR 205.103 describes recordkeeping and audit-trail obligations for certified operations that extend beyond a ratio or variance calculation. The USDA’s Strengthening Organic Enforcement FAQ explains that certification is operation-specific and certifiers verify the operations they certify.

Last reviewed: August 2026. Confirm current requirements and your specific circumstances with your certifier and qualified advisors.

Common questions

What does this planner calculate?
It calculates total recorded input, organic input share, recorded loss rate, expected output, output variance, and loss-rate variance from values entered in the browser.
Can this planner determine whether a product can use an organic claim?
No. Product claims and certification outcomes depend on complete records, applicable requirements, and operation-specific facts that this planner does not verify.
What should I do with a large variance?
Use it as a prompt to compare units, weights, production records, and internal process assumptions. The planner does not diagnose the cause or determine a compliance outcome.
Does this planner save my information?
No. The calculation uses values entered in the browser and does not provide a saved record or external verification.
